The federal Business Energy Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a straightforward 30% tax credit available to commercial businesses that invest in or purchase qualified energy property in the United States. Energy property is defined as either solar or geothermal energy. Solar energy property includes equipment that uses solar energy to generate electricity, to heat or cool (or provide hot water for use in) a structure, or to provide solar process heat. The 30% tax credit is taken on the net capital investment for the solar electric (photovoltaics) system, and is currently applicable for systems coming on-line before December 31, 2016.
